What does a Engineering Manager do?

Engineering managers own the productivity, growth, and happiness of an engineering team of 4-10. The role is fundamentally people management — 1:1s, performance reviews, hiring, terminations, conflict resolution — combined with enough technical credibility to set architecture direction and review big decisions. The first 12 months are the hardest career transition many engineers will make. The 2026 EM market has cooled (more layoffs than at any prior point in tech) but the bar for what makes a good EM has also risen — empathy, executive presence, and the ability to ship through ambiguity.

A typical day
