What does a AI Product Manager do?
AI Product Managers own the discovery, scoping, and shipping of AI features inside larger products. The role is distinct from a generic PM in three ways: you must understand LLM capabilities and limits (hallucination, latency, cost), you must design with evaluation in mind (how do we know it works?), and you must navigate the messy probabilistic UX that traditional product instinct doesn't cover. Compensation is the highest of any PM specialty — frequently 30-50% above a comparable non-AI PM. The hiring bar is shipped AI features, not certificates. Almost every AI PM today transitioned from either traditional PM, ML engineering, or founder roles.
A typical day
- Review an eval run — the new prompt regresses on 2 of 50 test cases, investigate
- Pair with the AI engineer on choosing between Claude Sonnet 4.6 and a fine-tuned Llama
- Spec a new "smart summarization" feature with explicit safety + cost guardrails
- Run a customer call — find that users want citations, not just the answer
- Brief leadership on the $X/month LLM cost projection for next quarter
Step-by-step roadmap
3 phases. Plan ~9 months at 14h/week.
PM foundations + AI fluency
Write PRDs, scope work, run user research. Plus deep fluency in LLM capabilities, limits, and the 2026 model landscape (Claude, GPT, Gemini, Llama).
- Ship one PRD for an AI feature critiqued by an AI engineer
- Compare 3 frontier models on the same task — write up the trade-offs
- Prototype one AI feature in v0 / Lovable / Cursor end-to-end
Evals + measurement
How to design eval sets, measure AI feature quality (precision / recall / hallucination rate), and the cost + latency engineering that determines unit economics.
- Build a 50-example eval set for a real AI feature with measurable scores
- Pass a SQL screen — pull AI feature usage data without help
- Document one production cost-cut: how much, what trade-off
Shipping + leadership
Cross-functional AI launches: legal review, safety review, customer comms, gradual rollout. Plus the executive skill of explaining AI capabilities + limits to non-technical leaders.
- Lead one AI feature launch end-to-end to real customers
- Brief a C-level on AI strategy with a clear point of view
- Mentor one non-AI PM into shipping their first AI feature

Why this role matters in 2026
Every B2B company is shipping AI features in 2026. The supply of PMs who can credibly scope, evaluate, and ship AI is a fraction of the demand. This is the single most underpriced PM specialty.

Write a PRD for a Real AI Feature
Pick a product you use and write a complete PRD for adding one AI feature — scoping, evals, risks, success metrics.
Build an Eval Set for an AI Product
Build a 50-example eval set for a real AI task — extraction, classification, summarization — and score 3 models.
AI Feature Cost + Latency Model
Model the unit economics of an AI feature — tokens, latency, throughput, and the break-even price per request.
Ship an AI Feature Prototype
Prototype a working AI feature in Lovable / v0 / Cursor with proper UX patterns (streaming, loading, errors, citations).
