What does a Product Manager do?

Product managers decide what to build, when to build it, and how to measure if it worked. The role has bifurcated: B2B PMs (workflow design, integrations, enterprise contracts) and B2C PMs (growth, experimentation, retention). The 2026 PM toolkit is SQL fluency, A/B testing literacy, and the ability to prototype AI features — most PMs are now expected to build clickable Cursor / Lovable prototypes themselves before asking engineering to commit. There is no single PM path; common entry points are APM programs (rare and competitive), associate PM roles at startups, or transitions from engineering/design.

A typical day

  • Run a customer call — synthesize 3 unmet needs into a one-pager
  • Pair with the data scientist on the A/B test design for next sprint
  • Write a PRD with engineering — pin the scope and the non-goals
  • Prioritize the backlog with engineering lead and design lead
  • Present the quarter's roadmap to the leadership team in 15 minutes

Step-by-step roadmap

3 phases. Plan ~14 months at 12h/week.

Why this role matters in 2026

PM hiring has cooled in 2026 (over-supply from 2022-2024 boom). PMs who can ship AI features themselves — not just spec them — have a sharp hiring advantage.
