What does a Business Analyst do?
Business analysts (BAs) translate business needs into requirements engineers can build, then verify the result actually solves the business problem. The role exists in two flavors: traditional BAs in consulting / enterprise (Big-4, banks, regulated industries — high process discipline) and "modern" BAs at product-driven companies (SQL fluency, dashboards, lighter process, closer to a product analyst). The 2026 BA role has been reshaped by AI: requirements documents and process maps are largely AI-generated first drafts. Strong BAs focus on the irreplaceable parts — stakeholder interviews, judgment about which requirements to drop, and the data work that proves whether what shipped actually worked.
A typical day
- Run a 1-hour requirements interview with two operations stakeholders
- Build a SQL query to answer the question "how often does this exception case actually happen?"
- Update a process map after discovering an undocumented manual workaround
- Pair with the engineer on a tricky data-migration edge case
- Author a one-page test plan for UAT before next week's release
Step-by-step roadmap
3 phases. Plan ~8 months at 12h/week.
Analysis foundations
Requirements elicitation, user stories vs use cases, BPMN process mapping, Excel at a senior level.
- Complete IIBA ECBA cert (entry-level BA cert — recruiter signal)
- Map one real business process end-to-end with BPMN
- Author one set of requirements that an engineer accepts without major rewrites
Data fluency
SQL deeply (joins, window functions, subqueries), a BI tool (Tableau / Power BI), and the discipline of "let me check the data first".
- Pass a SQL screen — joins + aggregations + window functions
- Build a Tableau or Power BI dashboard that drives one decision
- Use data to invalidate one stakeholder assumption (and keep the relationship)
Stakeholder leadership
The senior skill of BA: getting executives to commit to scope, navigating political constraints, and the storytelling that makes data land.
- Lead one BA workstream on a project worth $250k+
- Brief one VP-level stakeholder weekly for at least a quarter
- Mentor one junior BA to deliver their first requirements doc

Why this role matters in 2026
BA work has bifurcated: AI ate the bottom (routine documentation, simple workflow mapping). Strong BAs with SQL + judgment are still in steady demand, especially in finance, healthcare, and regulated industries.
