What does a Sales Engineer do?

Sales engineers are the technical half of an enterprise sales motion. The role mixes hands-on technical work (demos, POCs, integration support) with sales judgement (deal qualification, customer relationships, navigating procurement). Strong SEs are the most-trusted person in the deal cycle — the engineer customers ask the hard questions. Compensation is OTE (base + commission); top SEs at high-ACV companies clear $300k+ in their second year. AI demos have raised the bar — SEs are expected to wire up working prototypes during the sales cycle, not just run scripted demos.

A typical day

  • Run a 45-minute technical demo for a Fortune 500 buyer
  • Scope a 2-week POC for an enterprise prospect — define success criteria
  • Pair with the account exec on a deal-strategy call
  • Build a custom integration prototype for a key prospect
