What does a Customer Success Manager do?

CSMs own the post-sale relationship — onboarding, adoption, renewal, expansion. In B2B SaaS, CSMs are the most direct lever on net revenue retention (NRR), which is the metric VCs care about most. The role is part account management, part product expertise, part data analysis. Senior CSMs at high-ACV companies are highly compensated; the role has clear paths into sales (AE), product, and operations leadership. AI customer-success tools (Gainsight AI, Catalyst) have automated routine outreach, so CSMs have shifted toward strategic accounts and complex renewals.

A typical day

  • Run a quarterly business review (QBR) with an enterprise customer
  • Build a customer-health dashboard for the top 10 accounts
  • Triage a churn-risk signal — schedule an exec call
  • Pair with product on a feature request from a strategic account
  • Run an onboarding kick-off for a new $200k ARR customer
